During the early 1940’s, Bill May established a custom guitar manufacturing and repair business known as “Maton Stringed Instruments and Repairs”. This enterprise was successful and Bill was joined by his his older brother, Reg, a wood machinist, to join him as a full time guitar maker. Maton are without doubt the number one brand associated with guitar in Australia.
Dating Maton Guitars
For the acoustic guitars – it used to be printed on the label in the soundhole (e.g. 09/11 for Sep 2011) until 2015. As of Feb 2017 they working on an on-line tool.
“re electrics. ..the ‘Serial Number’ for the electric guitars can be found on the back of the headstock, can be difficult to see as the guitar gets older. We do have connections to the ‘Tasman’
it was a guitar Maton had manufactured in Japan, but quite quickly decided they weren’t being true to their dream of a great Australian guitar.
There were 2 versions, the ‘CW40’ & the ‘CW60’
And also the “Alver”

Alver was like Maton’s version of what Squier is to Fender. Bare bones models built in the same factory as more expensive Maton’s but geared towards kids and students.
